Residential
Although green building’s success is rooted in integrated design concepts, much of the groundwork on a new project is done in the traditional method. For example, a designer or architect draws up floor plans and elevations for approval by the owners; the plans are turned into detailed construction drawings that can be passed along to a general contractor. Once the general contractor is hired, he instills the work of specialty subcontractors, or augments his own crew with subcontractors, and builds the house. This is how many green concepts are incorporated into the home’s overall design.

 

Whether we are implementing HVAC systems, water-efficient plumbing, solar paneling, insulation or other key parts of the project all are viewed as interrelated parts of the whole so that the project flows in its final stages. SC&C believes strongly in involving all the principles early on in the construction process and maintaining consistent, clear channels of communication.

Commercial

State and local governments are enacting new, more stringent building codes, often using green building frameworks such as the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program as requirements. Both for-profit and non-profit players in the industry are establishing new models for retrofit and real estate redevelopment financing and the two segments are working together more now than ever.

 

At the federal level, the House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) in June 2009, laying out a detailed approach to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the Senate is debating its own version of climate and energy legislation.
